Mufti: Egyptians appreciate Armed Forces' sacrifices

CAIRO - 9 March 2018: Egypt's Mufti Dr Shawqi Allam said all Egyptians do appreciate great sacrifices of the heroes of the Armed Forces in defending the homeland.

Speaking on the occasion of celebrating the "Martyrs' Day" on Friday, March 9, Allam reiterated his full solidarity with all State institutions, topped by the police and army, in uprooting terrorism.

He further urged the Armed Forces to fight terrorists with an iron fist and thwart their attempts to spread destruction and chaos in Egypt and the whole Arab region.

Every year, the Armed Forces celebrate the "Veteran Warrior and Martyrs' Day" on March 9, the day that witnessed the death of Lieutenant General Abdel-Moneim Riad who sacrificed his life for the sake of the nation.

Riad was the chief of staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, when he was killed along with several of his aides in an Israeli mortar attack on March 9, 1969.

Riad also commanded the Jordanian forces in the 1967 Six-Day War.

The day Riad and his colleagues were killed is commemorated in Egypt as the Martyrs' Day.
