CAIRO – 13 February 2018: A total of 29 members of the Muslims Brotherhood were sentenced in absentia on Monday to life in prison over violence and murdering in Suez in 2015.

Suez Criminal Court sentenced six others who attended the hearing to 15 years in prison. Two minors were sentenced in absentia to three years in prison, while four were acquitted of the charges.

The charges include belonging to a terrorist group, illegal protesting, inciting violence against the police and military. Those acquitted include the former undersecretary of the Lawyer Syndicated branch in Suez, and Ibrahim al-Fangary, a former member of the syndicate’s board.

Violent pro-Muslims Brotherhood demonstrations were organized in the city in 2015, resulting in the killing of a civilian and sabotage of public and private properties.
