CAIRO - 31 January 2018: Al-Mohafezeen (The Conservative) party, headed by Parliamentarian Akmal Kortam, announced their support to Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in the upcoming presidential election.

In a statement published on Tuesday, the party said they discussed the recent challenges and dangers facing Egypt, especially those concerning the national security of the country.

“The party decided to re-elect President Sisi for a second and last presidential term,” the statement read.

The party also called on the president and government to meet the people’s expectations and establish a civil, democratic and modern state.

The statement also affirmed that the party supports the ideology the government is following in the “comprehensive reform process” that it had initiated.

The party stressed that achieving justice, dignity, freedom, economic sufficiency, equality and integrity requires supporting and developing organizations in the country, including the intermediate organizations and the civil institutions, enabling them to perform their social role, the statement read.

The conservative party is a center-right party that was founded in 2006 by journalist and writer Mostafa Abdel Aziz. In 2010, the party decided to freeze all its activities, rejecting political laws imposed on parties during former President Hosni Mubarak’s era.

Accordingly, Abdel Aziz sent a notification to the former Chairman of the Political Parties Committee Safwat al-Sherif, calling on him to stop the financial assistance provided to the party. After the January 25 Revolution in 2011, the party resumed its activities and Kortam was appointed as its head.

On Monday, which marked the deadline for submitting presidential candidacy forms, Chairperson of El-Ghad Party Mousa Mostafa Mousa’s lawyer submitted Mousa’s application to run for the presidential election due in March, as the only competitor to Sisi.

Most of the prominent political parties in Egypt announced their support to Sisi to lead the nation at this critical moment, including Salafist Al-Nour, Al-Wafd, Al-Masryeen Al-Ahrar (Free Egyptians), Al-Mo’tamar (Congress), Mostakbal Watan (Future of the Nation), and Homat Al-Watan (Homeland Protectors) parties; in addition to the Egypt Support coalition, which represents the majority of Parliament members.
