CAIRO – 27 January 2018: The Ministry of Interior released a statement on Saturday regarding the alleged attack on former head of the Central Auditing Organization, Hesham Genena, where he suffered serious injuries to his face and leg.

Genena, accompanied by his house’s guard called “Ramadan Ibrahim”, had just left his home in the Fifth Settlement outside Cairo where he hit with his car a man called “Al-Sayyid Mahmoud Khalaf” while he was crossing the street. Khalaf was accompanied by two others who clashed with Genena and Ibrahim, according to the ministry's accounts.

The ministry's statement added that Ibrahim hit one of Khalaf’s accompanies with a metal stick, while the other side hit Genena with a knife.

Security sources said the two sides were questioned at a police station after the incident. The arms were seized by the police, and the case was referred to the prosecution.

Pictures later posted on social media and verified by Genena's family show him with a badly battered eye and a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his knee.

Genena is a leading member in the campaign of the presidential hopeful ex-general Sami Anan, who announced his bid to run in the upcoming elections few days before he was apprehended.

Egyptian authorities arrested Anan last week over charges of breaking military codes by running for a political post without obtaining the necessary permissions, incitement against the army, and forgery of election documents. Then, Anan was removed from the voters’ database.

Anan's advisor Genena was assuming the position of Egypt's top auditor before he was sacked over accusations he exaggerated the size of corruption revealed in one year.
