CAIRO – 22 January 2018: President of Liberia George Weah received in his residence in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, Ibrahim Mahlab, assistant to the President of the Egyptian Republic for national and strategic projects, in the presence of the ambassador of Egypt in Monrovia.

Mahlab delivered a greeting message sent by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to the Liberian president, inviting him to visit Egypt.

Weah grew up in Clara Town, a slum in Monrovia and went on to become the only African to win FIFA World Player of the Year, starring for AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

His popularity at home fueled a previous run for president in 2005. He won the first round then but lost the second round to Johnson Sirleaf, whom he succeeded .

Mahlab reviewed with the Liberian president the close ties between the two countries. He also discussed means of enhancing relations between the two countries and pushing for economic partnership and investment promotion.

The Liberian president expressed his appreciation to the Egyptian president for his congratulations, praising the depth of the relationship between the two countries and the appreciation of the Liberian people and government to Egypt, which did not abandon them during the successive crises in Liberia. He also promised that Cairo would be his first foreign tour to meet President Sisi.

Mahlab's visit comes within the framework of his tour in a number of African countries, under the guidance of President Sisi.
