CAIRO - 19 January 2018: The son of former President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Abdel Hakim Abdel Nasser, announced on Thursday his endorsement for President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to run for a second presidential term.

“President Sisi is a national icon and is backed by Egyptian people of all sects,” Nasser said in press statements on Thursday.

Voting in the 2018 presidential elections in Egypt will start on March 26, as announced by the National Electoral Authority (NEA) on Monday, January 8.

Potential candidates must submit their nominations between January 20 and 29; however, a handful of candidates have already announced publicly their intention to run for presidency, including the human rights lawyer Khaled Ali, Mortada Mansour and former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Samy Anan.

Sixty million eligible voters will cast their ballots in the election between March 26 and 28 in Egypt, while expatriates will vote between March 16 and 18.

President Sisi took office in 2014 after protesters toppled Muslim Brotherhood affiliated ex-President Mohamed Morsi.

President Sisi has not yet officially announced his candidacy for a second term.
