CAIRO – 10 January 2018: Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman revealed in a statement that he would approve a 2018 construction plan to build 1,285 housing units in the West Bank, Times of Israel reported.

Under international law, the settlements Israel builds are illegal as the West Bank is designated an occupied territory.

The authorities are also planning, according to Lieberman’s statement, to build 2,490 more units in more than 20 locations across occupied territories.

On New Year’s Eve, the Likud Central Committee, the party’s top decision-making body, voted in favor of extending Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. The non-binding resolution aims to annex Israeli settlements built in the West Bank.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party, Palestine’s largest faction, said the decision represents an end to the remnants of the peace process.
