CAIRO – 24 December 2017: "President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi will inaugurate new Assiut Barrage Project and its hydroelectric station in March 2018," said Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohammed Abdel Ati.

The inauguration comes in the frame work of Sisi’s keenness to develop the governorates of Upper Egypt and establish projects that serve agriculture, and irrigation, achieving sustainable development.

The Assiut Barrage Project aims to improve irrigation in Upper Egypt. These barrages will irrigate 1.65 million feddans which represent 20 percent of the total cultivated area in Egypt, distributed over five governorates.

A million Egyptian farmers will benefit from these barrages. They aim to improve river navigation through the construction of navigators, as well as the production of clean electric power through a hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 32 MW.
