CAIRO – 23 December 2017: Minister of Transportation Hisham Arafat said on Saturday that electric trains will enter service in two years after completing the implementation of the facilities and the metro network.

“We are working on promoting the Metro service and developing it in order to provide good service to our citizens,” Arafat stated in a conversation on Sada Al Balad channel, adding that they started working on the Adly Mansour Metro station.

The Ministry of Transportation is set to construct two container transshipment terminals in the ports of Safaga and Nuweiba, in addition to a cruise port, marina, business center and entertainment complex in Sharm el-Sheikh Port, Arafat added Saturday.

The minister said to Egypt Today that these projects would create thousands of jobs for citizens in the Red Sea and South Sinai governorates, boosting development. He added that projects in Sharm el-Sheikh Port will cost $600 million.

In Safaga Port, a multipurpose terminal will be constructed to receive containers and non-container cargo at a cost of $400 million on 500,000 square meters, with a quay stretching 800 meters. Its capacity will be 3 million containers and 7 million tons of non-container cargo.

In Nuweiba Port, a multipurpose terminal will be constructed to receive containers and non-container cargo at a cost of $350 million on a surface of 140,000 square meters, achieving integration with the free zone, which covers 1 million square meters, in the same port. That project will facilitate trade exchange between eastern Arab countries and western Arab countries, and will be the beginning of the Silk Road with China.
