CAIRO- 7 April: Egypt called on the United States and Russia “to reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday, following a U.S. missile strike on a Syrian airbase.

In a statement, the ministry stated that Egypt is following with great concern the repercussions and “serious developments” of the chemical attack that targeted Syria’s village of Khan Shaikhoun and left dozens killed last week.

Egypt stressed the importance of keeping Syria and the Middle East away from dangers of the escalating crisis. It also demanded a “swift end” of the military conflict in Syria to save lives, urging all Syrian parties to cease fire and resume negotiations.

The statement further said that Egypt wants both the U.S. and Russia to take effective actions, while considering “international legitimacy,” in order to contain the conflict, which has aggravated over the past six years.

Both the U.S. and Russia have responsibilities toward peacekeeping and international security, said the statement, adding that “it is urgent to remove Syria from the dangerous slide it is facing.”

Early on Friday, the U.S. military fired dozens of cruise missiles at a Syrian airport. The move was in retaliation to the deadly chemical weapon attack that was launched Tuesday by the Syrian regime, killing more than 80 people in Khan Shaikhoun Village.

According to a statement by the Syrian army, six people were killed and “big material losses” resulted due to 59 missiles launched at the airport.

The U.S. attack triggered criticism from Russia, which called for UN Security Council meeting on US Syria strikes, according to AFP news agency. The Kremlin

labeled

the strikes “an aggression;” and warned that they were a “significant blow to Russian-American relations.”
