CAIRO – 7 December 2017: Dozens of journalists staged a protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, outside the Journalists’ Syndicate in Downtown Cairo on Monday.

The protesting journalists announced their solidarity with the Palestinian people against Trump’s decision, chanting “resistance is the solution.”

They also burned the Israeli flag outside the syndicate’s headquarter, raising signs imprinted with phrases such as “down with Israel and down with the U.S.,” and “Jerusalem is Arab.” The protests also raised photos of Jerusalem and maps of Palestinian territories.

On Wednesday night, United States’ President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel during a televised speech from the White House.

"It is the headquarters of many government ministries. For many years, visiting American diplomats met their Israeli counterparts in Jerusalem. It is now the heart of one of the most successful democracies in the world," Trump stated.

Egyptian security forces were deployed in front of the journalists’ and lawyers’ unions in order to secure citizens during protests against Trump's Jerusalem decision, a security source said. Security forces also reinforced their presence in front of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

Earlier, a number of Egyptian lawyers staged a protest against Trump’s resolution of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
