CAIRO – 9 March 2017: Egyptian General Prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered Wednesday an investigation into the death of the Egyptian citizen, Hany El-Sayed Mohamed, in a Sicilian prison last week,

Al-Masry Al-Youm reported

.

Sadek ordered the International Cooperation Office to prepare an official request to Italian judicial authorities asking for the results of their investigations.

Sayed was serving a four-year prison sentence handed down by an Italian court in 2014 for assaulting a police officer, according to news reports, and reportedly committed suicide in his cell.

Egyptian-Italian relations have suffered since the death of Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni, who was tortured and killed in Cairo in early 2016. Italian authorities accused Egyptian security forces of killing him.
