CAIRO – 22 November 2017: Egypt’s divorce rate hits an all-time high; according to the National Council of Women (NCW) there is a divorce case every two minutes in Egypt.

Director of the Complaints Bureau at the National Council for Women (NCW), Hanaa Refaat, confirmed that the divorce rate among women has skyrocketed recently.

The most common reasons attributed to the increase are wives lacking the wherewithal to stand up to their or their husbands’ families and in many cases, increased substance abuse by husbands.

She further mentioned that 80 percent of women resort to “Khula,” a legal action by which a women can divorce her husband, predominantly due to increased narcotics’ use by husbands.
