CAIRO - 20 November 2017: Parliament's human rights committee will summon Minister of Awqaf (religious endowments) Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa in December to review the ministry's plans on human rights and the spread of moderate Islamic discourse to marginalized areas.

Head of the committee Alaa Abed said that the minister will answer the questions and inquiries of committee members, as well as on the efforts to establish human rights office in the ministry in accordance with the cabinet's directives.

Abed highlighted the important role of the ministry and its major impact in issues related to human rights, saying that the role of clerics and scholars is very important as they have greater impact than any other state institution in the country.

He underlined that Gomaa seeks to spread moderate Islamic discourse, which is based on tolerance and acceptance of the other, as well as denouncing extremism and violence.
