CAIRO – 20 November 2017: Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades is supposed to honor his Egyptian counterpart President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi by granting him the Order of Makarios III, which is the highest order of merit awarded by Cyprus.

Makarios III was the first Cypriot president who took office from 1960 until 1977.

His realname was Mikhail Khristodolou Mouskos, and he was born on August 13, 1913. Makarios III served as the archbishop and primate of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus since 1950 until 1977. He was also a well-known politician who believed and called for the unity of Greece.

The first Cypriot president was honored by his country after his death, when they erected a huge statue in his honor near the main gate of the presidential palace.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is expected to arrive at the Cyprus capital, Nicosia, the morning of November 20 on an official two-day visit in which he will participate in the fifth Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot tripartite summit.

Several preparations have been completed already near the Cyprus
presidential palace as part of the welcoming ceremony for Sisi. This marks the
first official visit from an Egyptian president to Cyprus.

The two-day visit is supposed to include several meetings on the sidelines of the tripartite summit.

Sisi is also expected to give a speech in front of the Cypriot parliament, in
which he will praise the two countries’ relations and their rapid growth
during the past few years.
