CAIRO – 2 November 2017: In new updates on the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni, Italian magazine Vanity Fair revealed that Regeni's Cambridge University tutor, Professor Maha Mahfouz Abdel Rahman, has close relations with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Roman prosecutors then sent a formal petition to British authorities on October 9 to question Abdel Rahman.

According the Italian magazine, the prosecutors aim to acquire the professor's mobile and fixed-line phone records from between January 2015 and February 28, 2016 to view her network of relations.

Maha Abdel Rahman has lied and cleared various circumstances about her relationship with Regeni, which appears clearly through records of Skype conversations and emails.
Earlier, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi stated in his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Wednesday that Egypt is keen to penalize those involved in the homicide of Italian researcher Regeni.

Since then, Egyptian-Italian relations have witnessed great development, as Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni decided to reinstate Ambassador Giampaolo Cantini following his withdrawal for a period of one year.

Some Italian newspapers cited the incident of the Egyptian engineer who was killed by the Italian tourist in the Marsa Alam Red Sea resort town as one of the reasons behind the decision to return Italy's ambassador to Egypt.

On January 25, 2016, the 28-year-old Italian postgraduate student Regeni disappeared in Cairo, only for his dead body to be found on February 3 alongside the Cairo-Alexandria highway, bearing signs of extreme torture and beating, according to Reuters. This murder led to strained ties between Italy and Egypt.
