CAIRO – 23 October 2017: Egypt Today briefs top European newspapers on Monday for political issues and others related to accidents. Catalonia's parliament will hold a plenary session on Thursday morning to lay out its response to Madrid. A wildfire tore through the French island of Corsica and destroyed 2,000 hectares of forest.

Sisi, Putin to attend inauguration of Dabaa NPP by end of 2017

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will attend the inauguration of the first Egyptian Nuclear Power plant (NPP) at the Mediterranean city of Dabaa by the end of this year, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker told Egypt Today on Monday.

The plant is built on 55 square kilometers in Dabaa, Matrouh governorate; once completed, it will consist of eight reactors. Russia will build the first four reactors while the construction of the other four will be through international aid. Each reactor will produce 1,200 megawatts of energy.

Bangladesh says Rohingya arrivals "untenable" as thousands arrive daily

Bangladesh UN envoy said on Monday that nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees have fled violence in Myanmar, an "untenable situation" for neighbor Bangladesh, calling on Myanmar to let them return.

Shameem Ahsan, Bangladesh's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, told a donors meeting that his country was pursuing efforts with Myanmar to find a "durable solution" to the crisis. However, Myanmar continued to issue "propaganda projecting Rohingyas as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh."

Iraqi Kurdish opposition party Gorran calls on Barzani to step down

Kurdish Movement for Change (Corran) called on Sunday to resolve the presidency of the Kurdistan region of Iraq and the formation of a "national salvation government" to deal with the crisis between the Kurds and the Iraqi central government.

A statement issued after the Kurdish movement leaders meeting in Sulaymaniyah city affirmed "the formation of a government of national salvation and the dissolution of the presidency of the Kurdistan region."

Corsica wildfire ravages 2,000 hectares of forest

A wildfire tearing through the French island of Corsica has destroyed 2,000 hectares (nearly 5,000 acres) of forest, but no longer poses a threat to villages in the area, emergency services said Monday.

The fire, which erupted on Sunday in the north of the Mediterranean island, was still raging Monday, as scores of firefighters battled to put out the flames.

The local emergency said on Monday that the rainfall, a sharp drop in temperature and a change in wind direction meant the fire no longer posed a threat to villages nearby. A house and a sheep barn were damaged by the flames, it added.

Catalan parliament to meet on Thursday to decide how to respond to Madrid

Catalonia's parliament will hold a plenary session on Thursday morning, spokesman for the regional Junts pel Si party said on Monday, in which it will lay out its response to Madrid after the central government said it would impose direct rule.

The spokesman said the party plans to launch a legal appeal against the application of article 155, which rests power from the regional government and lays the groundwork for new elections.
