CAIRO – 3 October 2017: Egyptian intelligence Chief Major General Khaled Fawzy assured that Cairo’s government will always support the Palestinian cause, and all of the reconciliation and unity efforts for its interest.

In a short speech delivered by General Fawzy during the first cabinet meeting of the National Consensus Government, he stressed that the Palestinian case is a matter of “national security” for Egypt.

“The recent escalations that have been taking place during the past period within the Middle East region came as a warning for us that the possibility of finding a real solution for the Palestinian case might be lost, especially with the existence of several terrorist and armed groups around us,” Fawzy said.

He added that Egypt did all the necessary work to reconcile all the factions per its convictions and beliefs in the cause and Palestine.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi also sent a supportive message to Palestinians and their newly formed Consensus Government during its meeting in Gaza.

"Egypt is the main supporter of the Palestinians’ demands," Sisi said in a taped video message.

Hamas’ movement had announced on September 17 the dissolution of the administrative committee at the Gaza Strip, inviting the Government of National Reconciliation to assume its duties and hold general elections. The movement affirmed it would comply with the Social Reconciliation Accord signed in 2011.

Earlier, Palestinian President Abbas said that there is no other country is as vital to the Palestinian cause as Egypt due to its historical and political position in the region. “Egypt has an opinion, a position and an interest in the Palestinian cause,” said Abbas.
