CAIRO - 28 September 2017: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received in his office on Thursday the new Italian ambassador in Cairo, Giampaolo Cantini, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid in a press release.

During the meeting, Shoukry stressed on the special relations and common interests that both Egypt and Italy share. He also reiterated Egypt's commitment to complete investigations into the killing of Italian student Giulio Regeni.

Shoukry stressed that the Italian ambassador will find “cooperation and welcome all Egyptian from state institutions during his term in office.”

For his part, the Italian ambassador expressed his country's appreciation for the relations with Egypt and his hopes for strengthening “bilateral relations” in the upcoming period.

On January 25, 2016, the 28-year old Italian postgraduate student Regeni disappeared in Cairo, only for his dead body to be found on February 3 alongside the Cairo-Alexandria highway; bearing signs of extreme torture and beating, according to Reuters. This murder has led to strained relations between Italy and Egypt.
