NEW YORK, Sept 19 2017: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit underlined the importance of pooling efforts in such a critical stage in order to hammer out an appropriate political settlement for the Syrian crisis.

This settlement should meet the hopes and aspirations of the Syrian people, who have been suffering over the past six years, Abul Gheit added during his meeting on Tuesday with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of Abul Gheit’s participation in the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, Arab League spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a statement.

De Mistura reviewed during the meeting the outcome of the latest contacts held with the Syrians, regional and international parties concerned in addition to the efforts he exerts to pave the way for a new round of Syrian talks in Geneva, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, Abul Gheit touched on the Arab League’s stance on the Syrian crisis, which was embodied in the resolution issued during the latest meeting of the AL council at the level of foreign ministers on September 12.

The AL chief also urged De Mistura to continue communicating with him periodically in order to post him on the latest developments with regard to the contacts he holds in this regard.
