State Council finalizes Dabaa NPP contracts Monday

CAIRO – 17 September 2017: The third committee of State Council's department of Fatwa and Legislation will hold an urgent meeting on Monday to finalize the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) fuel contract.

The Council’s vice president Ahmed Aboul-Naga will head the meeting to discuss the final legal and constitutional remarks on the contract with Russia and send them to the government, well-informed sources said.

All the Ministry Of Electricity & Renewable Energy assigned staff will also participate in the meeting.

On September 5, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to attend the final signing ceremony of Dabaa in Egypt. Putin announced that he accepted the invitation.

Egypt and Russia reached an intergovernmental agreement on November 19, 2015 that granted the construction of the Dabaa nuclear power plant using Russian technologies; backed by a $25 billion loan from Russia.

The nuclear power plant, to be developed by Russian state-owned firm Rosatom, by which it will consist of four units generating 1200 MW. Egypt hopes that the launch of the first nuclear power plant will take place in 2024.
