CAIRO – 11 September 2017: Three terrorists were sentenced to death, two others jailed for ten years in prison over charges of killing a police officer, and injuring five others after attacking a police checkpoint in Alexandria in 2016.

Alexandria criminal court issued its ruling on Monday after listening to all the witnesses during the past hearing sessions and investigating all of the evidences and details of the terrorist attack according to an official statement.

Several attacks on police and army checkpoints took place by armed and terrorist groups during the past period, the army however responded with several military operations. Hasm terrorist group, which is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood, claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.

On September 29, 2016, Hasm claimed responsibility for a failed assassination attempt that targeted the prosecutor general's top deputy, Zakaria Abd El-Aziz. Also on October 5, 2016, former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa survived an assassination attempt after two masked men opened fire on him and his guards.

On December 9, 2016, the group claimed responsibility for a bomb that detonated near a police checkpoint in Giza governorate. The bomb killed at least six policemen and injured three others.
