CAIRO – 29 August 2017: Three Palestinian political detainees were released from Hamas prisons within the framework of the Social Reconciliation Accord signed in Cairo in September 2011, Maged Abou Shamala, member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, told the press on Tuesday.

The detainees are Hassan Mohamed El Zant, Sobhy Ahmed Abou Dahy, and Ahed Abou Kamar.

Zant was accused of being one of ten men suspected of plotting an assassination attempt on former Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority Ismail Haniyeh in 2008.

Abou Kamar was accused of setting multiple fires in Gaza Strip in 2005 along with others.

Abou Shamala expressed hope that all political detainees would be released soon through the efforts of the Social Reconciliation Committees comprising members of all 13 nationalist factions in Palestinian Territories.

The goal of the accord is to restore unity among Palestinian political actors in order to address Palestinian cause issues and solutions, and peace with Israel.
