CAIRO – 17 August 2017: Cairo Governor Atef Abdel Hamid announced on Wednesday that the municipality will accomplish in the near future the renovation of 60 percent of Khedivian Cairo, which includes 500 historic buildings, of which 200 buildings were renovated throughout the last 4 years.

The announcement was during a party held to celebrate Cairo’s 1,048th anniversary, and Khedivian Cairo’s 150th anniversary, Wednesday. Khedevian Cairo, whose buildings are in the Baroque style, was built in the rule of Khedive Ismail between 1863 and 1879 when he also built Abdine Castle, which had become the royal palace till 1952 when the royal rule was terminated.

Among the areas that will be developed is the one surrounding the stocks market, where vehicles will not be allowed. The same idea was executed in Alfy Street as it has been dedicated to restaurants and cafes.

In the occasion of that anniversary, the governorate’s municipal authorities launched several activities last month, including a bicycle rally and a marathon in Khedivian Cairo, visits to Abdine Castle for ambassadors to Cairo and students, issuing postage stamps and producing silver coins carrying the images of its buildings, holding a lecture on its history and buildings as well as producing a documentary on the city.
