Guinea supports Egypt in election of UNESCO Director-General

CAIRO - 15 August 2017: The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guinea Makalé Camara has stressed her full support of Egypt and Ambassador Moushira Mahmoud Khattab in the election of the post of Director-General of UNESCO, while visiting Khan el-Khalili on Monday, said the Parliamentarian Mohamed Orabi.

Camara was accompanied by Orabi, Khattab, the nominee in the election of UNESCO new Director-General; and Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Mohamed Idris. They ate dinner during the visit in Naguib Mahfouz café.

Guinea has played an important role in the resolution of 29th African Union Summit held from June 27 to July 4, 2017 in Addis Ababa to support Khattab in the election.

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received Camara on Sunday August 13 who was invited to Egypt to discuss means to enhance cooperation between the two countries and continue their dialogue held in the 44th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on July 10-11, 2017 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

Nine candidates; four of them were Arab candidates from Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt; are nominated for the post of Director-General of UNESCO.

A new Director-General is elected every four years by the General Conference. UNESCO’S present Director-General is Irina Bokova.
