CAIRO – 15 August 2017: After his withdrawal last year over the murder of Italian researcher Gulio Regeni, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni decided on Monday to return Ambassador Giampaolo Cantini back to Cairo four days after the killing of an Egyptian engineer in Marsa Alam by an Italian tourist.

Ambassador Cantini was born in 1957 in Florence. He earned a bachelor degree in political science and a diploma in international political studies. He is married with one daughter.

Cantini started his career in diplomacy in 1983 as a diplomat in the political affairs department. From 1986 till 1989, he was the senior secretary for the economic and activities department at the Italian embassy in Addis Ababa.

Then, Cantini had become Italy’s senior secretary at the United Nations in New York till 1994 before he got back to the political affairs department in his country as a diplomatic consultant.

Cantini was appointed as the embassy’s senior consultant in Washington between the years 1999 and 2003. In the same year, he held the post of the general manager of credit cooperation association till 2007.

After Cantini had been ambassador to Algeria (2007–2012), he became Consul General to Jerusalem. He took office in Egypt as ambassador in May 2016.
