CAIRO – 5 August 2017: The Ministry of Tourism announced in a statement Friday that it has approved the burkini (full-body swimsuit) to be donned in swimming pools and sea waters, banning hotel and resort staff from preventing burkini-wearing women from getting into the water.

The ministry added in its statement that it had received several complaints made by female swimmers about some hotel staff banning them from swimming in different pools or ordering them not to wear burkinis, citing hygiene reasons.

“Burkinis are allowed as long as they are made of the same material as bikins,” it added in response.

Also, the ministry ordered hotels that already have more than one pool to allot one for veiled-women.

This move highlighted, as the statement read, the ministry’s keenness to rebuff any type of discrimination.

The burkini has lately surfaced as a buzzword, flaring up steamy religious and cultural debates across internet spheres.
