CAIRO - 3 August 2017: A parliamentarian at the House of Representatives re-called for discussing a bill proposes renouncing the nationality from terrorists, although the bill had previously been rejected by the government.

Parliamentarian Mostafa Bakry said in press statements on Thursday that he insists to bring the bill again for discussion during the third legislative season of the Parliament, due to convene in October.

Discussions over this bill were postponed by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legislative Committee in January, after the Ministry of Justice and the government have rejected it.
Bakry, who is a member in the committee of Constitutional and Legislative affairs, clarified that this “bill aims at putting punishment for members of terrorist groups; therefore it has to be discussed.”

The bill was drafted by Bakry and other parliamentarians and submitted to Parliament Speaker Ali Abdul Aal, who has stirred controversy in Parliament over its constitutionality. In their bill, the parliamentarians requested amendment of Article 26 of Egyptian nationality law of 1975.

The government rejected the bill clarifying that this would cause distinction between criminals, thus unconstitutional, and violates international conventions signed by Egypt and the global declaration of human rights.

Recently, the country has witnessed a number of terror attacks particularly against security personnel in checks points.
