Egypt’s FM, Trump’s Senior Advisor discuss regional issues

CAIRO – 19 July 2026: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdelatty met on Sunday with Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, as part of ongoing consultations and coordination between Egypt and the United States on regional developments and issues of mutual interest.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf, the two sides reaffirmed the strength of the Egyptian-U.S. strategic partnership and their shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors, while maintaining close coordination on regional and international issues. They also exchanged views on the latest developments across the region.

Sudan

During the meeting, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's efforts to support security and stability in Sudan and preserve the country's unity, sovereignty, and national institutions. He stressed the importance of reaching a sustainable ceasefire, strengthening the humanitarian response, and supporting a comprehensive Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process that safeguards the country's unity and fulfills the aspirations of its people for security, stability, and development.

Libya

The discussions also addressed the situation in Libya. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's longstanding position in support of Libya's unity and stability, emphasizing the need to preserve the country's national institutions and achieve a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process.

He called for holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible and reaffirmed Egypt's support for regional and international initiatives, including U.S. efforts, aimed at reaching a lasting political settlement that preserves Libya's unity and meets the aspirations of its people.

Horn of Africa

The meeting also covered developments in the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, describing it as an extension of Egypt's national security. He stressed the need to support state institutions; respect the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of regional countries; and reject policies or actions that could undermine regional stability.

Water Security

On water security, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of adhering to international law governing the use of transboundary water resources in a manner that serves the interests of all Nile Basin countries. He reiterated Egypt's rejection of unilateral measures in the Eastern Nile Basin, describing water security as an existential issue for the country.

For his part, Boulos praised Egypt's role in promoting security and stability across the region and emphasized the importance of continued coordination and consultation between Cairo and Washington on regional issues to advance shared interests and contribute to greater regional security and stability.
