CAIRO – 19 July 2026: Al-Azhar, Egypt’s top Sunni Institute, strongly condemned the heinous terrorist crime of the Israeli occupation that targeted mourners at a funeral in Nuseirat Camp in the central part of Gaza Strip, resulting in the martyrdom of a number of innocent Palestinians and the injury of others, in flagrant violation of all divine laws, international laws, and humanitarian norms.

In a statement, Al-Azhar affirmed that targeting civilians as they mourn their martyrs embodies an unprecedented level of brutality, contempt, and disregard for human sanctity and dignity. It revealed that resorting to murder has become a consistent approach to deepen the occupation of Palestine and liquidate the cause of its defenseless people, without the slightest regard for the sanctity of places of worship.

Al-Azhar warned against the continuation of these crimes amidst international silence and an unprecedented state of complete inability to hold accountable those who violate the principles of justice, morality, international law, and humanitarian norms.

Al-Azhar Al-Sharif reiterated its demand to the international community, the Security Council, and all human rights and humanitarian institutions to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, and to take urgent action to stop the aggression against the Gaza Strip and the ongoing crimes against humanity, to protect civilians, to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable, to work to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, and to enable them to obtain their legitimate rights and establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The attack on the funeral claimed the lives of seven people and injured 22 others, reported Palestinian journalists in Gaza on their Telegram accounts on Friday.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Sunday the daily statistical report on the number of martyrs and wounded as a result of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. It said that the total number of the martyrs who arrived at Gaza Strip hospitals during the past 48 hours reached 19 martyrs. Meanwhile, the number of injuries reached 60 people.

A number of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets, as ambulance and civil defense teams have been unable to reach them at this time, it added.
