Professor Emeritus Habib Abu Jumaa carrying a rug over his shoulder and a chair in his hand while assisting with the move to the college's new building
CAIRO – 18 July 2026: Al-Azhar University has honored Professor Emeritus Habib Abu Jumaa after photos circulated on social media showing him helping carry furniture to the new headquarters of the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies in Damietta.
Abu Jumaa, a professor emeritus of literature and criticism at the faculty and its former vice dean, was photographed carrying a rug over his shoulder and a chair in his hand while assisting with the move to the college's new building, which was inaugurated on Friday.
In recognition of what it described as his exemplary gesture, Al-Azhar University President Salama Gomaa Daoud honored Abu Jumaa, according to a statement issued by the university's Media Center.
Daoud said Abu Jumaa's willingness to help move furniture alongside university staff reflected the values of humility, respect for work, and teamwork.
He added that the professor's actions demonstrated that leadership is shown through example rather than words, and that the spirit of giving does not end with retirement or leaving office but remains an enduring personal value.
Daoud said Al-Azhar University deeply appreciates Abu Jumaa's gesture, expressing gratitude for his continued service to the university and its students and wishing him continued good health and success.
Commenting on the widely shared photos, Daoud said the incident was "not a fleeting moment, but a practical example that confirms a person's true value lies in dedication and service."
He added that Al-Azhar University would continue to highlight such inspiring examples that embody the institution's values and reflect the true spirit of scholarship and public service.
