CAIRO – 4 July 2026: In Gharbiya governorate, Egypt's Nile Delta, a newly-married couple made sure nothing, not even their own wedding, would keep them from watching Egypt take on Australia in Group 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
On Friday evening, the wedding hall transformed into a football arena. Guests and the bride and groom gathered in front of a giant screen, all eyes on the dramatic penalty shootout between the Egyptian and Australian national teams.
When Egypt clinched the win 4-2 on penalties, the celebration hit a new level, the couple waved Egyptian flags and danced, while guests ululated and joined in the joy.
This wasn't just a wedding celebration — it was history in the making. Egypt's penalty-shootout victory secured its place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time ever. The wave of celebration stretched far beyond Dallas, where the match was played, reaching communities across the Arab world, Egyptians abroad, and fans as far as Thailand — all united in celebrating the Pharaohs.
Egypt now advances to face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16.
