CAIRO – 1 July 2026: Senior officials from Iran and the United States are set to meet with Qatari mediators in Doha on Wednesday for talks on the interim deal signed recently to end the US-Iran war.

Iran's delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, is set to hold its first meeting with the mediators, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said.

However, the US and Iran are unlikely to hold direct talks.

Trump had said on Monday that Iran requested fresh talks in Qatar, adding that they would take place the following day.

Meanwhile, Qatar's foreign ministry said US envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner were in Doha to meet Qatari officials and mediators, not for direct negotiations with Iranian representatives.

The mediation efforts come after Tehran and Washington agreed to a memorandum of understanding aimed at halting their war, which started with US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

The war expanded to the region with Tehran launching retaliatory strikes on Arab nations hosting significant US military presence and closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly fifth of global oil and liquified natural gas passes.

Key issues expected to be discussed today include Iran’s chokehold on the strait and the release of Iranian funds frozen under US sanctions.
