CAIRO – 27 June 2026: Egypt said there can be no political solution to Sudan's crisis that places the Sudanese Armed Forces and militias on an equal footing during a meeting for the United Nations Security Council on Friday.
Egypt's Permanent Representative to the UN Ihab Awad warned that such solutions are “doomed to fail.”
He warned against attempts to divide Sudan or establish parallel state institutions are a "red line" for Cairo, denouncing attempts to undermine the neighboring country’s institutions.
Awad warned of dangerous developments on the ground, affirming that the actions of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Obeid constitute a flagrant violation of international law.
He voiced Egypt's support for the Security Council's press statement on the situation in El Obeid, condemning the starvation of civilians, obstruction of humanitarian aid and attacks on civilian infrastructure as grave violations of international humanitarian law.
Awad called for an end to the illicit flow of weapons and foreign mercenaries into Sudan.
He warned against systematic attempts to undermine Sudan's state institutions and create a new reality that threatens the country's unity.
Awad stressed that the international community must confront any efforts to fragment Sudan or establish parallel institutions claiming legitimacy.
The ambassador reiterated Egypt's call for a humanitarian truce and the launch of an inclusive political dialogue, saying any resolution to the conflict must be "purely Sudanese."
He added that attempts by some parties to fuel chaos in Sudan are "doomed to fail."
"Rescuing Sudan from this plight is a collective responsibility," Awad told the council. "It is a political, moral and humanitarian duty that we all shoulder."
