Participation of Algerian Community in Egypt in the Algerian Legislative Elections of July 2, 2026: An Embodiment of Active Citizenship and a Contribution to Consolidating the New Republic
By Mohamed Sofiane Brah, Ambassador of Algeria to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States
Under the profound reform process under way in Algeria, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the country continues to build the foundations of a "New Republic" based on strengthening the rule of law, consolidating democratic practice, and expanding the spaces for popular participation.
At the heart of this approach, citizenship emerges as a practical value and a responsible behavior, embodied in the citizen's contribution to national decision-making and to shaping the future of their country. Elections are among the most important democratic mechanisms enabling citizens to express their will and help build the constitutional institutions of the state. From this perspective, the Algerian legislative elections scheduled for July 2, 2026, carry paramount importance, representing a pivotal political milestone that reflects the dynamism of Algeria's democratic process and affirms the state's commitment to strengthening popular legitimacy and consolidating the rule of law.
This national event forms part of a comprehensive reform vision aimed at developing parliamentary performance, renewing the political elite, and broadening participation in public life, in step with the transformations under way in Algeria and in response to citizens' aspirations for more efficient, representative, and effective institutions.
In this context, the Algerian diaspora occupies a distinguished place in the national consciousness and in the public policies of the Algerian state, as a natural extension of the Algerian nation and an active partner in its development and national construction.
Algerian citizens residing abroad remain connected to their country's issues and aspirations, contributing to its standing and presence on the international stage, and forming an integral part of its political, economic, and cultural trajectory.
The participation of members of the national community in the legislative elections is therefore not merely the exercise of a guaranteed constitutional right; it also reflects the depth of their connection to the homeland and their commitment to shaping its future by electing their representatives in parliament, ensuring that their concerns and aspirations are conveyed and defended through constitutional institutions and democratic channels.
In line with this approach, the Algerian state has placed growing emphasis on representing the national community abroad and strengthening its presence in political life. This is reflected in the increase of parliamentary seats allocated to the diaspora from eight to twelve, alongside the reorganization of overseas electoral districts to ensure more balanced and equitable representation for Algerian communities worldwide.
The Independent National Election Authority, the constitutional body responsible for organizing, supervising, and monitoring the electoral process, has ensured all the conditions necessary for the success of this national event. This has been achieved by simplifying registration, voting, and candidacy procedures, and by providing legal and regulatory guarantees that promote transparency, integrity, and equal opportunity for all candidates.
These reforms have been reinforced by measures aimed at renewing the political elite and broadening popular representation: encouraging the participation of youth and women, and creating greater opportunities for university graduates and national experts to contribute to legislative and oversight work. This reflects a clear political will to build more representative and dynamic institutions, capable of meeting the demands of the moment and the aspirations of citizens both at home and abroad.
The success of this democratic process depends on the degree of citizen participation in fulfilling this national duty and exercising the right to vote. Every vote cast is a direct contribution to strengthening the legitimacy of institutions and to consolidating a culture of participation and responsibility, affirming that building a strong, modern, and prosperous Algeria is a collective project shared by all its citizens, wherever they may be.
I, therefore, appeal to the members of the Algerian community residing in the Arab Republic of Egypt to take an active part in this important national event, and to go to the designated polling stations: in Cairo, at the Algerian Embassy, 14 Brazil Street, Zamalek; and in Alexandria, at the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel, during the period from June 30 to July 2, 2026.
The participation of the Algerian community in Egypt in this national event is a renewed expression of loyalty to the homeland, and a living embodiment of the deep bonds uniting the Algerian people with their land, history, and shared destiny. It is also an expression of confidence in the institutions of the state and a firm belief in the role of the citizen in supporting reform, development, and the democratic gains Algeria has achieved in recent years.
I am certain that the sons and daughters of the Algerian community in Egypt, as we have always known them to be, will rise to the occasion of this national event, contributing their votes to support the march of the New Republic and to building a stronger, more prosperous, and more cohesive Algeria, one whose success derives from the unity of its people, the confidence of its citizens in its institutions, and the contributions of its sons and daughters, at home and abroad, in shaping its present and forging its future.
