Cairo Univ. climbs 27 places in U.S. News 2026 Rankings, reaching 221st Globally

CAIRO - 17 June 2026: The university has made significant progress in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 rankings, reaching 221st globally, up from 248th in the 2025 edition.
 
Cairo University maintains its position as the top university in Egypt and second in Africa.
 
This is considered a new international achievement reflecting the strength of Cairo University's academic and research performance and its regional and international leadership.
 
Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek, President of Cairo University, affirmed that this achievement represents the culmination of the university's efforts in implementing its ambitious strategy to develop education and scientific research and enhance international competitiveness.
 
It also reflects the university's growing stature as one of the most prominent academic and research institutions regionally and internationally.
 
The university president stated that the university's continued progress in prestigious international rankings confirms the success of the policies it has adopted in recent years to support researchers, develop research infrastructure, encourage international scientific publication, and enhance cooperation with leading universities and research institutions worldwide. This, he added, is reflected in the quality of scientific output and its international impact.
 
He further stated that Cairo University's goal is not merely to improve its ranking in global classifications, but rather to build an integrated academic and research system based on innovation, knowledge production, and community service.
 
This system supports the Egyptian state's efforts to build a knowledge-based economy and enhances its global competitiveness.
 
Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek pointed out that the university has achieved successive leaps in rankings in recent years.
 
Its global ranking rose from 427th in 2020 to 392nd in 2021, then to 363rd in 2022, before advancing to 271st globally in 2024, then 248th in 2025, and finally reaching 221st in the 2026 edition. This confirms the sustainability of the university's development and progress.  
 
Dr. Mahmoud El-Saeed, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, explained that the ranking results reflect the significant improvement in the quality of the university's scientific output, the rise in international publication rates, and the increased research collaboration with global institutions.
 
He emphasized that the university is committed to implementing its plans to enhance innovation and interdisciplinary research, and to align scientific research with societal needs and development priorities.
 
At the level of scientific disciplines, Cairo University achieved exceptional results that strengthened its international presence. It ranked among the top 50 disciplines globally in three key fields: 13th globally in Pharmacology and Toxicology, 31st globally in Mathematics, and 47th globally in Polymer Science.
 
The university also ranked among the top 100 globally in several key fields, placing 59th in Plant and Animal Sciences, 66th in Food Science and Technology, 70th in Public, Environmental, and Occupational Health, 88th in Agricultural Sciences, and 96th in Biology and Biochemistry.
 
The university maintained its strong presence among the top 200 globally, ranking 138th in Microbiology, 161st in Chemistry, 185th in Clinical Medicine, 189th in Water Resources Engineering, and 197th in Green and Sustainable Science and Technology.
 
The U.S. University Rankings are considered among the top 100 globally in various fields.
 
News & World Report is one of the most influential international rankings in evaluating universities globally, as it relies primarily on research performance indicators, global and regional academic reputation, the impact of scientific research, reference citation rates, the percentage of the most cited research globally, the level of international cooperation, and scientific publication in high-impact journals.
