CAIRO - 16 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its relations with the European Union (EU) and exploring opportunities for cooperation in innovative and non-traditional fields, praising the positive momentum that has characterized Egypt-EU relations since their elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024.
The remarks came during President Sisi’s meeting on Monday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Évian.
Presidential Spokesman Mohamed el Shennawy stated that President Sisi commended the significant progress and positive trajectory of Egypt-EU relations following the launch of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
He underscored Egypt’s determination to further advance these ties and expand cooperation into new and emerging areas.
Sisi highlighted ongoing efforts to implement the outcomes of the 2024 Egypt-EU Investment Conference, as well as the economic event held alongside the Egypt-EU Summit in October 2025.
He also reviewed the structural economic reforms undertaken by Egypt to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of its economy and improve the investment climate, expressing his aspiration that these efforts would encourage greater European business activity and investment in Egypt.
Meanwhile, EU chief expressed the European Commission’s satisfaction with the positive pace of cooperation with Egypt across various sectors. She praised the economic reform measures implemented by the Egyptian state in recent years, as well as Egypt’s efforts in combating terrorism and irregular migration, particularly in light of the considerable economic and humanitarian burdens resulting from crises across the region.
Von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to working closely with Egypt to address shared challenges, promote peace, and strengthen cooperation across the Mediterranean region.
The spokesman added that the discussions also covered several regional issues of mutual concern. President Sisi outlined Egypt’s position, emphasizing the need for sustainable political solutions to regional crises in a manner that preserves state sovereignty and safeguards the interests of their peoples.
Sisi also stressed Egypt’s commitment to working with the European Union to implement the agreement aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip.
For her part, von der Leyen praised Egypt’s responsible and balanced approach toward regional crises, noting the growing convergence between Egyptian and European positions, which enhances their ability to play constructive roles in resolving ongoing conflicts and promoting regional stability.
