CAIRO - 15 June 2026: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Dr. Badr Abdelatty met Monday, with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, at the Parliament's headquarters in Brussels.
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty conveyed the greetings of the President of the Republic and welcomed the positive role played by the President of the European Parliament in advancing and strengthening the partnership between the European Union and Egypt.
He noted that this reflects appreciation for the strategic and comprehensive partnership that unites Egypt and the European Union, and underscores the depth of Egyptian-European relations.
He stressed the commitment to continuing the implementation of the strategic partnership's pillars in various fields.
Minister Abdelatty expressed his aspiration to continue and enhance the existing parliamentary dialogue with the European Parliament, considering it a bridge of communication between the peoples of the Mediterranean.
He noted, in this context, the preparations for the fifteenth round of the parliamentary dialogue between Egypt and the European Union in Brussels.
This represents an important opportunity to inform the European Parliament about the modernization and reform process underway in Egypt, as well as to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the Egyptian and European parliaments in various areas of mutual interest.
Cooperation between Egypt and the European Union
The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening the parliamentary dimension of cooperation between Egypt and the European Union, and exchanging expertise in areas such as: combating extremism and terrorism, employment and training, development, and capacity building for parliamentarians, especially young people, in addition to combating irregular migration.
He also stressed the importance of cooperation within a comprehensive framework that links migration and development, addresses the root causes of irregular migration, and opens new pathways for regular migration and mobility.
Egyptian-European Consultations to De-escalate Tensions
The meeting witnessed an exchange of assessments regarding developments in the region. Minister Abdelatty reviewed the intensive efforts and contacts undertaken by Egypt to de-escalate tensions and contain regional escalations.
He welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, which he considered a highly significant development for restoring security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
The Foreign Minister also briefed the President of the European Parliament on the parameters of the Egyptian position on various regional issues, most notably the situations in the Gaza Strip, Sudan, Syria, and Lebanon, warning of the serious challenges these crises pose to the security and stability of the region.
For her part, the President of the European Parliament asked that her greetings and appreciation be conveyed to the egyptian President of the Republic, expressing her deep appreciation for his leadership and the balanced role Egypt plays amidst the turmoil in the region. She also commended Egypt's supportive role in establishing security and stability in the Middle East.
