CAIRO - 15 June 2026: Egyptian Minister of Local Development and Environment Dr. Manal Awad, announced that two new air pollution monitoring stations were added at Cairo and Al-Azhar Universities, as part of the "Air Pollution and Climate Change Management in Greater Cairo" project.
This initiative is part of the Ministry's efforts to develop and modernize the national air pollution monitoring network, and enhance the environmental monitoring system to address the challenges of pollution and climate change.
How many air pollution monitoring stations in Egypt?
Dr. Manal Awad confirmed that with the addition of these two new stations brings the total number of monitoring stations belonging to the national ambient air pollution monitoring network to 123, distributed across the governorates of the Republic.
This enhances the efficiency of the environmental monitoring system and ensures the provision of accurate and continuous data on air quality.
Dr. Awad explained that the installation of the two stations is being carried out in cooperation and coordination with Cairo University and Al-Azhar University.
The stations were established within the university campuses, which will contribute to enhancing the spatial coverage of the monitoring system within Greater Cairo, particularly in densely populated areas, and will support efforts to monitor and assess air quality more accurately and effectively.
The Minister of Local Development and Environment added that the two new stations are equipped with the latest technologies for monitoring concentrations of fine particulate matter, measuring black carbon levels, and tracking carbon dioxide emissions.
This will provide accurate and continuously updated data on pollution levels and air quality. The minister noted that this data represents an important scientific tool to support environmental studies and research, assess pollution levels, and assist decision-makers in developing the necessary policies and procedures to improve air quality and reduce the negative effects of air pollution on public health and the environment.
The Minister of Local Development and Environment affirmed that this step comes within the framework of the state’s strategy for the continuous expansion of the environmental monitoring system and raising the efficiency of the national network for monitoring air pollutants.
She further added that the move supports efforts to improve air quality and confront the challenges of air pollution and climate change, and enhances reliance on accurate scientific data in environmental planning and the formulation of policies that support the achievement of sustainable development and improve the quality of life for citizens.
