CAIRO - 15 June 2026: Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority Dr. Hisham El-Metwally Stet, affirmed that the Egyptian state is moving rapidly towards strengthening health security and localizing medical and pharmaceutical industries.

He pointed out that efforts to localize the industry contributed to achieving economic savings estimated at approximately EGP 2 billion last year.

This came during his speech at the African Medical Conference and Exhibition, held at the Al-Manara International Conference and Exhibition Center under the patronage of President El-Sisi, with broad participation from representatives of governments, international organizations, development partners, and experts in the healthcare sector from around the world.

He explained that the conference has become a key platform for dialogue, cooperation, and building strategic partnerships in the healthcare sector across the African continent.

He noted the importance of Serbian participation in this year's edition, reflecting the development of Egyptian-Serbian relations, in addition to the continuation of the strategic partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for the second consecutive year.

Health Security

He pointed out that the conference is being held at a time when health security is increasingly important as a pillar of stability and development.

He emphasized that the Egyptian state has adopted a vision that prioritizes the health of its citizens and works to ensure the sustainable availability of medicines, medical supplies, and technology, enhance spending efficiency, and support the localization of medical industries.

He added that what were strategic goals years ago have now become a tangible reality. He explained that during the previous edition of the conference, the first locally manufactured ultrasound machines were launched, along with the first Egyptian-developed and fully locally manufactured ventilator.

He pointed out that the state is also moving towards localizing the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), noting that savings achieved from locally produced pharmaceuticals reached approximately 470 million Egyptian pounds, while savings in medical devices and equipment amounted to 680 million pounds, medical supplies 510 million pounds, and laboratory equipment 350 million pounds.

He affirmed that Egypt has also succeeded in achieving self-sufficiency in human plasma derivatives, a strategic achievement that enhances the country's ability to provide vital and highly important products according to the highest international standards.
