Foreign Minister: Egypt and Eritrea agree on supporting peaceful solutions to conflicts

CAIRO – 10 June 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed that Egypt and Eritrea agree on the importance of strengthening cooperation and joint coordination to monitor developments in the Middle East.

He noted that presidential consultations between the two countries addressed a number of pressing regional issues, most notably the conflict between Iran and Israel and the Palestinian issue.

During a joint press conference with his Eritrean counterpart, Abdelatty stated that the presidential talks reviewed the latest developments in the region, including the military escalation involving Iran, as well as the Palestinian issue, which he described as the core conflict in the Middle East.

Abdelatty added that both sides condemned Israeli attacks in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as violations occurring in Lebanese territory, emphasizing the need to contain regional tensions.

The Foreign Minister explained that Egypt and Eritrea agreed on the necessity of fully respecting international law, state sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while rejecting military occupation and the use of military action as a means of resolving conflicts. He stressed the importance of prioritizing diplomatic efforts and peaceful political solutions as the most effective way to address regional and international crises.

Abdelatty noted that both sides rejected Israeli practices against the Palestinian people and affirmed their right to establish an independent state within the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He emphasized that these issues were among the most prominent topics discussed during the bilateral presidential consultations, reflecting a convergence of views on a number of regional and international issues.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of establishing effective arrangements and mechanisms to achieve collective security in the region. He also emphasized the need to expedite the activation of the Council of Arab and African States Bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, describing it as a fundamental pillar for enhancing regional stability.

Abdelatty stated during the press conference that the current phase requires the establishment of clear mechanisms for collective security, foremost among them the rapid activation of the Council of Arab and African States Bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

He said this would help address shared challenges and strengthen cooperation among countries in the region.

Abdelatty added that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Eritrean president agreed on the paramount importance of adhering to established principles of international law, particularly respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states.

The Foreign Minister further explained that both sides emphasized the need to uphold international law, including the complete rejection of any unilateral actions concerning transboundary international waterways, especially the Nile River, in order to safeguard the rights of all parties in accordance with international rules and norms.
