President El-Sisi reaffirms Egypt's commitment to security, stability in Horn of Africa

CAIRO – 8 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on Monday.

The official spokesperson for the Presidency stated that the welcoming ceremony included a guard of honor, the playing of the national anthems of both countries, and a commemorative photograph of the two presidents.

An expanded meeting was held with the participation of delegations from both countries, followed by a bilateral meeting between President El-Sisi and the Eritrean President. A luncheon was then hosted by President El-Sisi in honor of the Eritrean President and his accompanying delegation.

Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, the official spokesperson of the Presidency, said that President El-Sisi welcomed the Eritrean President’s visit to his second home, Egypt, highlighting the deep historical ties between the two nations.

He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts aimed at strengthening these relations and advancing cooperation across various fields to serve the shared interests of the two brotherly peoples, particularly through enhancing trade, economic, and investment cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea.

President El-Sisi also reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast commitment to supporting Eritrea's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The official spokesperson added that the Eritrean President expressed his pride in visiting Egypt and meeting with President El-Sisi, praising the development of bilateral relations between the two countries and Egypt's support for Eritrea's development aspirations.

He also affirmed Eritrea's desire to intensify cooperation with Egypt to strengthen the fraternal ties between the two countries and expand them to broader horizons in pursuit of their common interests and the aspirations of their peoples for prosperity and progress.

The spokesperson stated that the meeting also addressed regional and international developments, with the two presidents discussing the latest developments in the Horn of Africa.

In this context, President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering commitment to maintaining security and stability in the Horn of Africa, describing the region’s security as an extension of Egypt's national security. He further noted the importance of coordination between Egypt and Eritrea in preserving the stability of the region.

For his part, President Afwerki expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and support comprehensive development across the region. He stressed the importance of bilateral coordination between the two countries to preserve the foundations of peace and stability.

The official spokesperson added that the two presidents also discussed the latest developments in Sudan, with President El-Sisi reaffirming Egypt's unwavering support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, security, and stability. In this regard, both leaders confirmed the need to end the current crisis and support Sudan's efforts to restore comprehensive stability.

The two presidents also discussed ongoing cooperation between their countries to ensure the security of the Red Sea and freedom of navigation.

President El-Sisi highlighted the importance of intensifying coordination between the two countries, given the exclusive responsibility of Red Sea littoral states for its governance and for maintaining its security and stability.

President Afwerki expressed his agreement with this position, and both leaders agreed to continue coordination and consultation to promote regional peace and stability and support efforts aimed at achieving comprehensive development throughout the region.
