CAIRO - 8 June 2026: Eyes are eagerly awaiting the official announcement of the reopening of the Giza Zoo.
Scheduled for the last quarter of year 2026, the Giza Zoo has seen the completion of one of the largest and most comprehensive development and modernization projects in decades-long history.
By its re-opening, a temporary closure of the zoo will come to an end. Over the past years, the zoo underwent a radical restructuring aimed at transforming it into a world-class entertainment, and environmental center.
The renovation works also aimed at preserving the zoo’s historical and archaeological value.
Among the prominent changes is that the historic Giza Zoo is officially being renamed to “Genenet el-Hayawanat” [which literally translates into the Animal Garden.]
The zoo has witnessed a significant construction and environmental transformation, abandoning the traditional concept of “animals locked in cages” and replacing it with a system of open environments that mimic the animals’ natural habitats.
These upgrades were applied in accordance with strict international requirements and standards adopted by the the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), ensuring a healthy and safe environment for wildlife while simultaneously providing visitors with an exceptional and interactive experience.
The innovation works also included establishing developed educational and research aiming at raising environmental awareness and nature protection among new generations.
It is expected that the re-opening takes place in the last quarter of this year, which is expected to be a landmark event that will recall the zoo’s leading position as a premier touristic and cultural destination in the Arab region and Africa.
