BEIRUT – 7 June 2026: The Israeli military struck Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday, with Israeli prime minister and defense minister saying the attack was carried out in response to Hezbollah fire toward Israeli territory.
The strike targeted the Dahiyeh area, a stronghold of Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital.
The attack came amid growing uncertainty over US-backed ceasefire efforts.
The United States announced last week that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to implement a ceasefire, contingent on Hezbollah halting attacks and withdrawing its fighters from areas near the border.
Hezbollah, however, rejected the proposal.
In a statement, the group's leader, Naim Qassem, described the plan as unacceptable and said the "resistance" will continue as long as Israeli forces remain in occupied territory.
Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah resumed on March 2, when the group launched attacks in support of Tehran during the US-Israeli strikes against Iran.
US President Donald Trump has reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that attacks on Beirut will be unacceptable as Washington seeks to advance broader diplomatic efforts involving Iran.
