CAIRO – 6 June 2026: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Governor of Egypt at the World Bank, Badr Abdelatty, participated on Saturday in the plenary session of the 35th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he underscored the need for stronger international cooperation to address mounting global economic challenges.
During his address, Abdelatty highlighted the growing economic and developmental consequences of ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions, particularly on developing nations. He noted that these crises have disrupted global trade, supply chains, and energy and commodity markets, while also contributing to tighter international financing conditions.
The minister drew attention to the difficulties facing many African and developing countries, including rising borrowing costs, increasing debt burdens, and limited access to concessional financing. He stressed the importance of enhancing the responsiveness of multilateral financial and development institutions to emerging challenges and called for deeper regional economic integration to promote sustainable growth and unlock new investment opportunities across Africa.
Abdelatty also commended the EBRD’s contributions to private-sector development, sustainable infrastructure, energy security, and the provision of essential services, emphasizing their role in strengthening economic resilience and supporting development efforts.
Furthermore, he welcomed the bank’s conflict response initiative aimed at assisting economies affected by instability in the Middle East, describing it as a valuable example of effective multilateral cooperation in addressing regional and global challenges.
