CAIRO – 5 June 2026: Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, praised Egypt’s diplomatic efforts and regional role on a number of key issues in the Middle East, most notably efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing Egypt’s strength and influence in the region.
In remarks to Youm7 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, Zakharova said: “In response to your question about whether Russia views the Middle East and North Africa as a key destination for economic cooperation amid changing global circumstances, we have proposals for all countries in the region because we have a clear vision for cooperation with the entire world.”
“I want to emphasize that the whole world is capable of cooperating with Russia across all sectors. I reiterate that Russia is open to the entire world, and we attach great importance to the Arab region. Together with our partners in the Middle East, we welcome all those who wish to cooperate with us and find our proposals suitable,” she added.
Zakharova also commented on regional developments, saying: “The biggest shock was on March 26, the Israeli attack on Iran. I describe it as a shock because the consequences of previous mistakes were already extremely difficult. Therefore, what happened sent shockwaves throughout the region and the world.”
Regarding Egypt, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson affirmed that Moscow and Cairo share a long-standing and special relationship.
“Egypt’s policies are always aligned with the will of its people, which ensures that opportunities for cooperation between Egypt and countries around the world remain strong. These approaches are very similar to what Russia is pursuing,” Zakharova said.
Zakharova also spoke about her role as a Russian official, saying: “I am always committed to fulfilling my duties, serving my country, and representing it. I am, first and foremost, a woman, but my position and responsibilities always require me to prioritize serving my country and upholding its interests.”
