Prime Minister: Family law still under discussion and subject to amendment

CAIRO – 4 June 2026: Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly commented on Wednesday on the controversy surrounding the draft Family Law, emphasizing that the government is aware of the sensitivity and complexity of the issue, given the overlapping interests and differing viewpoints among the parties concerned.

During the government's weekly press conference at its headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, Madbouly explained that the draft law was prepared following consultations with a large number of experts and specialists, as well as consideration of the various opinions raised over the years regarding the matter.

The prime minister affirmed that the government is not committed to any specific wording in the draft law and remains fully open to any amendments agreed upon by the House of Representatives.

He added that the primary objective is to produce legislation that serves the public interest and addresses existing challenges in a balanced manner.

Madbouly noted that the government has proposed the formation of a joint committee comprising representatives from both the government and the House of Representatives to study the draft law in detail.

He explained that the committee will be responsible for reviewing the various provisions of the bill and gathering input from all relevant stakeholders, including Al-Azhar and other concerned institutions.

The prime minister stressed that the version currently in circulation is not the final draft of the law and that the legislation will undergo further dialogue and discussion before reaching its final form.
