CAIRO – 4 June 2026: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, met with Yamada Kenji, Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, on Thursday during his visit to Japan.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance economic and investment cooperation between the two countries in light of the Egyptian-Japanese strategic partnership.

Minister Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for the role played by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in supporting the economic partnership with Egypt. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to elevating economic, trade, and investment relations with Japan to a level that reflects the strength of the political ties between the two countries and supports their development and strategic priorities.

The foreign minister also reviewed the positive developments in the Egyptian economy resulting from the comprehensive economic reform program implemented by the state. He highlighted improvements in macroeconomic indicators, enhanced competitiveness, and a more attractive business environment.

Abdelatty stressed that Egypt offers Japanese companies a strategic platform for diversifying production centers and supply chains amid the challenges facing the global economy. He noted that Egypt’s unique geographic location and extensive network of free trade agreements provide access to Arab, African, and European markets.

The foreign minister invited the Japanese side to strengthen the involvement of the Japanese business community in the Egyptian market and capitalize on investment opportunities across various sectors.

In this context, he highlighted promising opportunities in new and renewable energy, green hydrogen, and low-emission ammonia. He expressed hope for attracting additional Japanese investments in these sectors and building on existing successful models of cooperation, particularly within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, to benefit from the zone’s competitive advantages and investment incentives.

The meeting also addressed Egypt’s efforts to localize industry in several strategic sectors, including electric vehicle manufacturing, renewable energy components, and water desalination technologies. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of leveraging Japan’s expertise in these fields and organizing additional trade missions and investment forums to boost bilateral trade and investment.

The two sides also explored prospects for expanding economic and development cooperation. Abdelatty expressed his aspiration to broaden cooperation in the transportation sector, particularly in relation to the development of Cairo International Airport and the completion of the fourth phase of the Cairo Metro Line 4 project.

He noted that these initiatives would support Egypt’s national development plans and help accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting the country.

The foreign minister also underscored the importance of strengthening the economic partnership with Japan through the establishment of a Japanese industrial zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Such a zone would support the presence of Japanese companies in the Egyptian market while taking advantage of the region’s strategic location and the incentives and competitive advantages it offers to investors.
