CAIRO - 29 May 2026: Dr. Yasser Abdel Fattah Abdel Hady, Professor of Solar Research at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, revealed details of the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, known as the "Eclipse of the Century," which is considered the most important astronomical event expected in the coming years.
The professor said in press statements that the world will witness an exceptional astronomical event on Monday, August 2, 2027, which is classified among the most important celestial phenomena of the 21st century.
The Great Total Solar Eclipse
Dr. Yasser Abdel Fattah pointed out that this event is called the "Great Total Solar Eclipse," as it will pass over large parts of North Africa and the Middle East, with Egypt located at the heart of one of the best observation areas in the world, especially the city of Luxor.
He explained that this eclipse is characterized by the long duration of total darkness, exceeding six full minutes and reaching 6 minutes and 23 seconds, a very rare duration in the history of solar eclipses.
One of the Longest Eclipses of the Century
A professor of solar research pointed out that the August 2027 eclipse is one of the longest total eclipses of the current century, explaining that most total eclipses usually last between two and four minutes, while this one will exceed six full minutes.
He added that the eclipse's path will pass over historical and archaeological sites worldwide, giving it unique scientific, touristic, and cultural dimensions. Furthermore, it will coincide with midday on a clear summer day, facilitating scientific observations and the capture of rare images and recordings of the phenomenon.
