WASHINGTON – 24 May 2026: A gunman was killed after shooting at a security checkpoint outside the White House on Saturday evening, according to the US Secret Service.

Secret Service officers stationed at the checkpoint exchanged fire with the suspect, who later died at a hospital. A bystander was also wounded but no injuries among Secret Service personnel.

US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was not affected by the incident.

He wrote a Truth Social post, saying that the suspect “had a violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure.”

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who had previously been arrested in July 2025 after attempting to gain entry to the White House and was later sent to a psychiatric facility, according to CBS News.

The shooting comes a month after a separate gunfire incident at the hotel hosting the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, which prompted Trump and other officials to be evacuated.
